Challenge

The Department of Transportation undertook a roadway rehabilitation project in Chesterfield, Virginia. As part of the project, they needed to install two sediment basins on Woolridge Road and Otterdale Road. Once the project was completed, they installed a chain-link fence around the basin.

Unfortunately, the site inspector noticed a scouring issue at the base of the pipe outfall leading to the basin. Curtis Contracting Inc., was then tasked with providing a permanent solution to protect the basin. The inspector suggested the contractor use rip rap to stabilize the outfall. However, it was logistically impossible to use rip rap without closing the road for delivery and taking down the newly erected fence. That’s when they contacted Ferguson Waterworks. Our goal? Stabilize the pipe outfall from scouring without removing the fence or shutting down the busy roadway.

Solution

After reviewing the project’s scope, we recommended ShoreFlex erosion control mats to prevent the scouring. In order to accommodate the other obstacles, our team worked closely with the onsite contractors to develop a delivery plan that not only accommodated the existing fence but also would not hinder the flow of traffic.

Product Advantages

Shoreflex concrete mat (also known as a grout mattress) offers permanent erosion control. Additional key benefits of this geomembrane/composite include:
  • Custom sizing
  • Rolled packaging with lifting and anchoring loops for easy distribution, handling, and installation
  • Cost-efficient in comparison to rip rap
  • Requires no maintenance

Method

Because Woolridge and Otterdale Road are highly trafficked, Ferguson Waterworks devised a plan for a quick and seamless delivery. Firstly, we ensured the delivery vehicle fit on the shoulder of the road, allowing traffic to pass. Then, each concrete mat was placed on the 12′ flatbed truck. Once the erosion control materials were loaded and driven to the site, it was time to tackle obstacle 2 – the chainlink fence.

The Shoreflex concrete mats were conveyed over the chain-link fence using the mat’s lifting straps. Once in the correct location, they were quickly unrolled and anchored down for permanent stabilization of the pipe outfall.

Case studies - results from installing permeable paving & machine technology to get an abandoned site and parking lot up to stormwater code

In order to revitalize and meet stormwater codes, the abandoned parking area at the Shoppes at Fashion Square in Orlando, FL, required updates. With a permeable paving system and machine technology, we helped the client achieve their goals, save $1 million, and complete the project in just 10 days.

ShearForce 10 installed beneath and around operational solar panels in order to prevent erosion.

With solar panels in place and operational, an immediate and effective erosion control solution was imperative. Especially considering the panels were positioned next to channels, drip lines, and spillways.
